Website Refresh or Full Redesign: Which Do You Actually Need?

A decision framework for improving what works without preserving the problems that do not.

A refresh protects the existing structure and improves selected parts of it. A redesign reconsiders the structure itself. The right choice depends less on ambition than on whether the current foundation can support the business you need to present now.

Choose a refresh when the foundation still works

A refresh is often enough when the pages are useful, the system is maintainable, and the main problems are presentation, stale content, weak imagery, or a few confusing paths.

  • The services and audience have not materially changed
  • The navigation still makes sense
  • The site works reliably across devices
  • Most improvements can be described page by page

Choose a redesign when the problems are connected

A redesign is more appropriate when the site reflects an old business model, important information has nowhere to live, the visual system cannot stretch, or technical limitations make every improvement expensive.

Compare the cost of preserving constraints

A smaller initial scope is not always the less expensive decision. If a refresh requires repeated workarounds and still leaves the business with a weak structure, rebuilding once may create more value. Equally, replacing a healthy system for cosmetic novelty wastes budget.

The useful conclusion

Keep the parts that are genuinely useful. Replace the parts that force the business to explain, apologize, or work around its own website.
